Summary

A brand-new Baby-sitters Club graphic novel adapted by newcomer Gabriela Epstein!
Claudia has always been the most creative kid in her class。。。 until Ashley Wyeth comes along。 Ashley's really different: She wears hippie clothes and has multiple earrings, and she's the most fantastic artist Claudia has ever met。

Ashley says Claudia is a great artist, too, but thinks she's wasting her artistic talent with The Baby-sitters Club。 When Claudia starts spending more time with Ashley and missing BSC meetings, it becomes clear that Claudia has to make a decision -- one of them has to go!

I liked the story, but the illustrations weren’t as good as the other eight。 Still worth while read though。

This one fell a little flat for me。 More repetitive storyline for the majority of the book before it finally gained momentum toward the end。 I liked the illustrations a lot though!

A transfer student upsets the status quo for the friendship group in the BSC。 It's not one of my favorite episodes since so many of the characters are acting mean and petty for a lot of the book, but I do like the arc Claudia follows and her conscientious interaction with the members of the Rodowsky family for whom she babysits even in the midst of all the tempest-in-a-teapot tween drama。 And there are good lessons about prioritization and time management。 It's a pretty decent start for the new A transfer student upsets the status quo for the friendship group in the BSC。 It's not one of my favorite episodes since so many of the characters are acting mean and petty for a lot of the book, but I do like the arc Claudia follows and her conscientious interaction with the members of the Rodowsky family for whom she babysits even in the midst of all the tempest-in-a-teapot tween drama。 And there are good lessons about prioritization and time management。 It's a pretty decent start for the new adapter, Gabriela Epstein。 。。。more

The art style was not my favorite。 In some panels, the characters appeared to be missing their noses。 Claudia's unique style of dress was expressed in many panels, but I was disappointed by her outfit on the cover。 I did like seeing a visual depiction of Claudia's relationship with the Rodowsky boys。 Jackie, in particular, was such a sweetheart。 The queer subtext was my favorite part about the original novel, but I was disappointed with it here。 I had hoped the queer subtext would be more direct The art style was not my favorite。 In some panels, the characters appeared to be missing their noses。 Claudia's unique style of dress was expressed in many panels, but I was disappointed by her outfit on the cover。 I did like seeing a visual depiction of Claudia's relationship with the Rodowsky boys。 Jackie, in particular, was such a sweetheart。 The queer subtext was my favorite part about the original novel, but I was disappointed with it here。 I had hoped the queer subtext would be more direct in this semi-modern update, but it was not。 If anything, I thought the queer subtext was less direct because the context changed in the line about sculpting love。 。。。more

Heck no! And although Ashley wasn’t the best, they didn’t have to trash talk her behind her back, nor to her face。 Stacy was being a very petty friend。 All of them were。 Claudia shouldn’t have had to apologize to any of them。 She did nothing wrong。 So this book wasn’t one of my favorites。 。。。more

Torn on this one。 On the one hand, parts of it are a fairly faithful adaptation of the original。 On the other, things were obviously changed and these things do not always make sense。If this is your first go round with the BSC at all, I think you'll enjoy the ride with a couple of quibbles we'll get to in a sec。 So on that merit, I'm giving this a solid 3 stars with the knowledge that for first timers, it might be higher。Thing is, this isn't my first go round with New Girl and my biggest quibbl Torn on this one。 On the one hand, parts of it are a fairly faithful adaptation of the original。 On the other, things were obviously changed and these things do not always make sense。If this is your first go round with the BSC at all, I think you'll enjoy the ride with a couple of quibbles we'll get to in a sec。 So on that merit, I'm giving this a solid 3 stars with the knowledge that for first timers, it might be higher。Thing is, this isn't my first go round with New Girl and my biggest quibble is that if you're going to change and adapt things (which I don't mind in theory), they should be things that make sense or help improve the story in some way。 Visually, I get changing Ashley's look。 You've got Dawn and Stacey as blondes already。 I get changing her aesthetic。 But there are repeated mentions of her original look, the hippie look, in text and this Ashley? NOT A HIPPIE。 Seriously, when Jackie asks if Claud and the girl who wears the long dresses are mad at one another, I looked back and counted exactly ONE instance of Ashley MAYBE wearing a dress (and it read more of a skirt)。 Even if I assumed that Ashley wore nothing but long dresses on weekends, given that she lives next door to Jackie's family, it's still a weird thing to include。 Seriously, just take out the hippie mentions and it's only a thing to people who read the original。A long held thought in the BSC fandom is that the BSC overreacts to Claudia's friendship with Ashley, especially when they trash her room/stuff and leave her mean little notes。 I've always been a bit on the fence about that because as a kid, I totally got why they'd do it, but I also get why, as adults, you'd think, "oh, honey, no。" This version is a bit more condensed and it feels even more rushed and out of character given that with the exception of Stacey being the worst friend/coworker a few books back, the BSC's been pretty squeaky clean/nice til now。 If nothing else, Stacey's reaction feels pretty authentic (fearing that Claud has replaced her with Ashley and being beyond ticked that Claud apparently lied about not being able to hang out), so that's a point in the book's favor。 I'm not really sure where I'm supposed to think these land on the updated timeline kind of thing。 Ashley's got a cellphone so Claud can call Dawn to tell her she's going to miss a meeting, but this also means that she could've called the first time (or any other time) to say she was going to be late so。。。 The other change is the hill I am apparently going to die on。 Jackie Rodowsky is adorable and fantastic in his own right and always has been。 But the fact that of the three Rodowsky brothers, he's the one shown with brown hair while Shea and Archie could be argued to have auburn hair (there's a reddish/purple tint going on) and that Shea's got the Rodowsky freckles but Jackie does not? SACRILEGE。 Look, if the Thomas boys in Karen's graphic novels can all look identical despite being different ages, I think the Rodowsky's can share freckles/red hair since there are height differences going on here。 Or, and here's a thought, let Jackie be the standout with the reddish hair and freckles。 I promise, if we can tell the difference between Dawn and Stacey, we'll know that Jackie isn't a Pike sibling。 I will die on this hill and I will take you with me。 。。。more

I love the BSC graphic novel series and I was excited to see a new one come out by a new author。 I loved the story and the illustrations to it! (Claudia is my favorite character, too, so even better) 5/5 ⭐️

Claudia loves art just as much as she loves babysitting。 Her fellow babysitters might not quite understand Claudia's passion for art, but Claudia is fine with that until she meets new classmate Ashley。 Ashley participated in an exclusive art program in Chicago, and she thinks Claudia has potential。 Claudia is thrilled to have someone to talk to about art, but Ashley doesn't understand why Claudia spends so much of her time babysitting instead of dedicating her time exclusively to her art project Claudia loves art just as much as she loves babysitting。 Her fellow babysitters might not quite understand Claudia's passion for art, but Claudia is fine with that until she meets new classmate Ashley。 Ashley participated in an exclusive art program in Chicago, and she thinks Claudia has potential。 Claudia is thrilled to have someone to talk to about art, but Ashley doesn't understand why Claudia spends so much of her time babysitting instead of dedicating her time exclusively to her art projects。 Suddenly Claudia is sitting with Ashley at lunch and missing BSC meetings--is Claudia's time on the BSC over? Another great addition to the oh-so-popular Baby-Sitters Club graphic novels。 We are well past the chapter books I remember reading, so I can't say how closely this aligns to the original book, but I appreciate Claudia's recognition of her very busy (and sometimes too busy) schedule。 This is the first book with new illustrator Gaby Epstein's art, and she does a fantastic job of blending with previous illustrators while also making these her own。 Looking forward to more to come! 。。。more

A new author for the series。 It also takes me a bit to get used to the new drawing style。 I liked the ending of this book a lot and how the book showed friendship conflicts and resolutions。 I wasn't a huge fan of the amount of captions used in the book。 It felt like a lot was just being told instead of really shown。 A new author for the series。 It also takes me a bit to get used to the new drawing style。 I liked the ending of this book a lot and how the book showed friendship conflicts and resolutions。 I wasn't a huge fan of the amount of captions used in the book。 It felt like a lot was just being told instead of really shown。 。。。more

This is the first illustrated by Gabriela Epstein, and I think her artwork may be my favorite so far。 I feel like she captures all of the characters' facial expressions really well, especially Kristy and Jackie's。 They both have domineering personalities, and that really came through the pages。 Also, Claudia is my favorite BSC member, so I loved this one。 This is the first illustrated by Gabriela Epstein, and I think her artwork may be my favorite so far。 I feel like she captures all of the characters' facial expressions really well, especially Kristy and Jackie's。 They both have domineering personalities, and that really came through the pages。 Also, Claudia is my favorite BSC member, so I loved this one。 。。。more

This is one of my favorite books, so I'm happy that the graphic novel is extremely faithful to the source material。 I like the character design of Ashley; her edgy style felt like a good update of the 1980s "hippie"。 I enjoyed the way this brings the story to life。 Claudia and Ashley's "finding source material" montage is funny and relatable, Jackie Rodowsky is sweet and winning, and Ashley's abstract fire hydrant sculpture is cool。 I was sort of hoping against hope that the queer subtext in thi This is one of my favorite books, so I'm happy that the graphic novel is extremely faithful to the source material。 I like the character design of Ashley; her edgy style felt like a good update of the 1980s "hippie"。 I enjoyed the way this brings the story to life。 Claudia and Ashley's "finding source material" montage is funny and relatable, Jackie Rodowsky is sweet and winning, and Ashley's abstract fire hydrant sculpture is cool。 I was sort of hoping against hope that the queer subtext in this book would be made text in the update, and it's not, but it's also not toned down。 It includes one of my favorite moments: when Claudia tells Mimi she just met a girl who she somehow thinks will be a good friend, and Mimi remarks that it happens that way sometimes - it happened that way with Claudia's grandfather。 I felt the exact same way when I, at twelve, first met the cool edgy-style artist who would eventually become my first queer significant other, so that moment/this book was very important to me。 。。。more

I have exactly zero memory of this book from my original BSC days, even though I must have read it at least once。 Reading it again now, I think I can see why。 I don't think this story would have appealed to me at all when I was ten or so, and Claudia wasn't my favorite narrator。 Reading it now, I think I got a lot more out of it as a story。 Epstein did a good job with her adaptations (I think!) and she added a few really nice touches。 Like including the recipe when Claudia makes a snack with the I have exactly zero memory of this book from my original BSC days, even though I must have read it at least once。 Reading it again now, I think I can see why。 I don't think this story would have appealed to me at all when I was ten or so, and Claudia wasn't my favorite narrator。 Reading it now, I think I got a lot more out of it as a story。 Epstein did a good job with her adaptations (I think!) and she added a few really nice touches。 Like including the recipe when Claudia makes a snack with the kids she's babysitting。 And Epstein's style works with what's been going on with this series since the first volume。 The kids who have been reading these books for the first time will happily roll with this one, and the adults reading for nostalgia will be at least ok with the new author。 。。。more

I didn’t realize this was a new artist, which was a little jarring at first while adjusting to the new style。 The story felt much shorter than the previous titles and I’m not sure why (maybe I was just so excited to read it?) Very good nonetheless。

This was another good graphic adaptation of the Babysitters Club。 I love the new artist, Gabriela Epstein。 Her art was bold and colorful and did a great job of telling the story。 I hope she illustrates the next few books as well。The story was good - typical Babysitters Club。 I thought Ashley was annoying and pushy, but then that was the point, right? Probably my least favorite of the three illustrators who have corroborated for the BSC graphic novel series so far。 The writing was pretty much on par as previous volumes。 A complex storyline, but always wraps up nicely with a big red bow。

A new illustrator has taken the reigns after 4 books by Raina, then 4 by Gale Galligan。 It was a pretty seamless transition although I was bugged that Claudia (who is Japanese American) has brown hair instead of black。 I loved how she drew Kristy and Dawn though。 A great story about balancing friendship with interests and school and not letting yourself be controlled; standing up for yourself。 4。5 stars

If “nice” friends are girls who eat all your candy and leave notes saying, “Roses are red, violets are blue, Traitors are jerks and so are you” then I hate to think what mean girls are like。 I’ve read all the previous bsc books, and the characters in them were nothing like the girls in this book。 All throughout Claudia and the New Girl I kept waiting for Kristy and the rest of the bsc to make a big apology to Claudia for being nasty, unkind friends, but they never did! Still loving this series but damn, those girls were SAVAGE! I'm so glad I'm not in middle school anymore haha。 I love that this series has developed into an exchange of illustrators taking on a great older series of books。 It would be neat if this continued with other series from the same time period。 It allows a whole new generation to appreciate the stories。 Still loving this series but damn, those girls were SAVAGE!
